| Card Review: |
The Alaska Airlines Visa® Platinum Card, issued by Bank of America, is designed for those who travel frequently on Alaska Airlines or any of its partner airlines (American Airlines, British Airways, Continental Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Horizon Air, KLM, Lan Chile, Northwest Airlines, or QANTAS).
Through the reward program, cardholders earn one mile for every dollar spent on the card and double miles are earned with purchases made through Alaska Airlines or special vacation packages (this option is not available on the classic or gold cards). Upon approval, 5,000 bonus miles are applied to the account and 2,000 bonus miles are applied to the account every year upon renewal. Accumulated miles do not expire as long as there is activity on the account within a three-year period and there is no yearly limit (the gold and classic cards impose yearly limits).
In addition to the reward program, cardholders can expect various platinum benefits offered by Bank of America, such as up to $1,000,000 in travel accident insurance, auto rental insurance, various travel and emergency assistance services, extended warranty services, online account access, an annual $50 companion ticket - which is provided yearly to the cardholder (see website for additional benefits offered).
The interest rate applied to purchases and balance transfers is reasonably low for a reward card (lower than that of the gold and classic card), though not ideal for those who plan to carry a balance. The annual fee is slightly high, though reasonable as compared to other platinum airline reward cards. However, there is a minimum cap of 19.99% for cash advances, so no matter how low the Prime Rate falls (the APR is tied to the Prime Rate), the interest rate will not go below the minimum cap.
Therefore, those who can afford to pay in full each month (to avoid finance charges) and will be able to redeem a free ticket within a two-year period (due to it's annual fee of $75) while taking advantage of the additional benefits offered, will benefit most from what the Alaska Airlines Visa® Platinum Card has to offer.
Overall, the platinum card proves to be a much better option (for those who qualify) as compared to the classic and gold cards, due to the lower APR and additional cardholder benefits. |
